Beatriz Lima at the University of Minho Law Week: “Data Protection Law and Intellectual Property"
The way the law responds to the challenges of generative artificial intelligence, personal data protection and intellectual creation is redefining legal practice.
It was in this context that, on 3 March, Beatriz Lima, Co‑Founder of NLP, took part as a speaker in the Law Week of the School of Law of the University of Minho (EDUM), on a panel dedicated to “Data Protection Law and Intellectual Property”, organized by AEDUM.
In a panel that brought together Professor Alberto Francisco Ribeiro de Almeida (Universidade Lusíada do Porto and external consultant to WIPO) and Dr Joaquim Arménio (member of the Portuguese Data Protection Authority – CNPD), moderated by Dr Pedro Dias Venâncio (Director of the Master’s in Law and Informatics at EDUM), Beatriz focused on the impact of generative AI on copyright and on the main challenges this technology poses to classical models for protecting intellectual works: from the use of pre‑existing content in training datasets to the legal qualification and exploitation of outputs generated by AI systems.
