NLP’s founding partner, Joana Piriquito Santos, who has now taken on the role of managing partner, spoke to Negócios about the firm’s journey over the past two years and its vision for the future, as well as the key challenges and opportunities in the field of Intellectual Property in Portugal and across Europe.
In the interview, she gives a very positive assessment of these first years, with 2024 and 2025 exceeding expectations and 2026 set to be a year of consolidation and organic growth.
Throughout the conversation, she stresses the importance of Portuguese companies treating intellectual property as a strategic asset, moving beyond a purely reactive approach to disputes and infringements and instead investing in preventive IP policies aligned with their business models. She also addresses the impact of artificial intelligence, calling for greater transparency, and highlights the central role of the Unified Patent Court in Europe and the need to strengthen the resources of the Intellectual Property Court in Portugal, noting that a strong economy cannot exist without an effective justice system.
